Expo: Dit mag je niet missen dit najaar

PAPIER HIER? Elk jaar trekt Art on Paper het oeroude kinderspel met kleurpotloden en papier de hogere beeldende kunsten in en zet het op een piëdestal.
WORDT ER BINNEN DE LIJNTJES GEKLEURD? Alles kan, niets moet. Je vindt hier behalve technische tekenwonderen ook duizelingwekkende droedels, kunstige collages, papieren sculpturen en beweeglijke performances van zowat vijftig gevestigde en aanstormende kunstenaars van evenveel binnen- en buitenlandse galeries. Overtuigd? Of moeten we er nog een tekeningetje bij maken?

INSIDE OUT? Since 2016, Strokar has been bringing street art inside from outside, and is now planning to create an international street art hub and laboratory in a former Delhaize.
STREET ART IN A SUPERMARKET? Get more, pay less! With work by some 100 artists, including Bronx graffiti legends T Kid and Cope 2, and a series of pictures from the New York graffiti scene in the 1980s by the legendary American photographer Martha Cooper.

PERFORMING MIRACLES? Yes, this is undoubtedly one of the most exciting ideas of the new season. A Brussels-based organization that is entirely devoted to performance art, an art discipline that is oh so intriguing but often forgotten because it is immaterial.
BE THERE OR BE SQUARE! A Performance Affair is going in search of an audience during a free three-day opening event. The organization is bringing out the big guns, like Violent Incident by the American titan Bruce Nauman. But they are also presenting a whole series of interesting contemporary artists like Forced Entertainer Tim Etchells, globetrotter Sarah Trouche, Brussels-based Slovenian Ištvan Išt Huzjan, wonder duo Sarah & Charles, and wild man Joris Van de Moortel. In other words, just be there before this art disappears into thin air again.

ART OU DESIGN ? Les deux mon capitaine! Explorant ce moment où le design est sur le point de basculer dans l’art, cette exposition présente des pièces uniques, ou en série limitée, réalisées par des designers belges, avec des pièces emblématiques qui remontent aux années soixante.
ART DE NICHE : Dans cette zone grise où la fonctionnalité semble mise en veille, le créateur sort ses griffes pour laisser parler la matière ou la forme, éclectique et déroutante.

QU’EST-CE QUE ÇA RACONTE ? La couleur manifeste, ce sont des couleurs et des matières pour faire un maximum avec le moins possible. Tout au long de sa carrière, l’artiste peintre Bernard Villers n’a eu de cesse d’interroger les composants traditionnels de son médium.
ELLE EST LIBRE, MA COULEUR : En décidant de tourner le dos à toute représentation, l’artiste pense pouvoir privilégier l’émotion et éviter certaines discussions stériles, et il en amène d’autres, d’autant plus qu’il a aussi choisi l’édition et le livre où il fait croiser les mots et les couleurs.

WHERE’S MY HEAD AT? It is pretty well-known by now that there is a portal to dark and perverse worlds at Sterput. Thanks to “Là-bas”, it will now take you back to a medieval setting.
ARE WE GOING ON A WITCH HUNT? Sort of. The French-Belgian Körper collective – along with roguish people like Benjamin Monti and Bryan Beast – is brewing a stiff hallucinogenic around the historical figure Gilles de Rais, a hero of the Hundred Years’ War who ultimately (wrongfully?) was strung up for infanticide, Satanism, and sodomy. In short: a small ray of light in this darkest of ages.

INTO THE WOODS? Yes! L’iselp is transforming Brussels into a veritable urban jungle by hosting twelve artists with green fingers and a fascination for sophisticated plant life.
ANSWER THE CALL OF NATURE? Sure. Surprisingly, plants are much more similar to humans than you would expect. It is all about looking the right way. And to help you do that, the work of artists like Olga Kisseleva, Cécile Beau, and Lise Duclaux are the best guide that you could imagine.

EYE ON THE PRIZE? Koenraad Dedobbeleer might have won the Belgian Art Prize in 2019, if it were still going to be awarded and if one of the other laureates, Sven Augustijnen, Gabriel Kuri, or Jos De Gruyter & Harald Thys, hadn’t won it instead. Fortunately, long before that doomed prize selection came along, Wiels had realized that the Brussels-based artist’s work was more than deserving of its own solo exhibition.
LIVING IN THE MATERIAL WORLD! In “Kunststoff – Gallery of Material Culture”, Wiels is bringing together more than forty works by Koenraad Dedobbeleer, including fifteen new works. In his sculptures, photos, slide projections, books, and works on paper, he dissects the meaning of the label “material culture” and the way in which value is attached to certain materials. This sounds serious, but Koenraad Dedobbeleer’s tongue in cheek presentation is both playful and refreshing.

DE VROUW DIE DE WANORDE MEET? De Italiaans-Brusselse Teresa Cos reist Ludwig Boltzmann (1844-1906) achterna, de Oostenrijkse wetenschapper die zich in het concept van de entropie verloor.
ENTROWATTE? De maat voor de wanorde in een systeem. Iets met macro en micro, toestand en mogelijkheden. Complexe materie, die in Cos’ audiovisuele installatie heel mooi tastbaar wordt gemaakt door (micro)anekdotes te koppelen aan (macro)gebeurtenissen.

QUIÉN ES ? Né dans le Frioul, le photographe italien s’est installé à Caracas au début des années cinquante et a consacré toute sa carrière au continent sud-américain.
POURQUOI LUI ? Fortement influencé par le néoréalisme à ses débuts, il s’est beaucoup intéressé à l’architecture qu’il a photographiée pour l’Unesco, mais quand il s’intéresse à un bâtiment, il se préoccupe aussi de la vie qu’il y a entre et derrière les murs. Et quand il photographie les paysages, c’est pour décoder les tensions sociales qui les habitent.

HET OUDE BERLIJN? Is Brussel vandaag het nieuwe Berlijn? De Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten doen niet mee aan de hype en richten liever de blik op het echte Berlijn van zo’n honderd jaar geleden.
IS DAT GEEN BESTOFTE GESCHIEDENIS? Bestoft is het Berlijn van toen allerminst. De periode tussen de twee Wereldoorlogen was voor de kosmopolitische broedhaard voor de kunsten een brandpunt van sociale verandering, welvaart en crisis, hoop en verval, utopie. Dat moet blijken uit straf werk van onder anderen Otto Dix, Kazimir Malevitsj en Aleksandr Rodtsjenko.

THEO WIE? Theodoor van Loon was een barokschilder uit het Brusselse die in de eerste helft van de zeventiende eeuw vooral werkte voor het hof van de aartshertogen Albrecht en Isabella en religieuze ordes, maar wiens werk zich, in tegenstelling tot dat van tijdgenoot Rubens, niet in het collectieve geheugen heeft weten te nestelen.
CARAVAGGIST TOT IN DE KIST! Op zijn reizen naar Italië deed Theodoor van Loon een fascinatie op voor het werk van de Italiaanse meester van het clair-obscur Caravaggio. En dat blijkt uit de goed vijftig doeken, gravures en tekeningen die Bozar bij elkaar wist te brengen. Daarop tonen Van Loons voornamelijk religieuze figuren zich tegelijk imposant en gedetailleerd, vol gevoel en beweging, subtiel gehuld in licht en schaduw. De herontdekte meester gaat in Bozar ook nog eens de dialoog aan met de hedendaagse zwier van Joris Van de Moortel en Romeo Castellucci.

THE WORLD ACCORDING TO? Leonard Freed (1929-2006), an American documentary photojournalist and long-time member of the prestigious Magnum photo agency.
FREEDOM! In his career, Leonard Freed chose life, raw and uncut, on the verge of change. He gained fame with his visual account of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States, but also covered the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Cold War Germany, and the revolution in Romania. Photography as an indictment of the world as it is.

EUH, HOUDT DIE REVOLUTIE OOIT OP? Ja, Revolutions is de tigste tentoonstelling die de hete jaren 1960 probeert te reanimeren. Maar ook het ING Art Center heeft een goede pitch.
ECHT, EEN BANK DIE DE REVOLUTIE PREDIKT? Min of meer. Revolutions is een reizende expo die werd samengesteld door het prestigieuze Londense Victoria and Albert Museum. Terwijl je oren door The Beatles, Janis Joplin en Jimi Hendrix worden opgeschud, (her)beleef je langs 250 foto’s, kleding en designstukken de Swinging Sixties in Londen, Mei ’68 in Parijs, de Summer of Love in San Francisco of het Woodstock-festival. Bal die vuist!

DANSER AVEC LES YEUX :Les discothèques ont toujours été un monde à part que les designers ont pris plaisir à reconstruire en jouant sur les sens et les formes. Des clubs italiens des années soixante au Studio 54, à l’Hacienda ou au Ministery of Sound, la réalité est ailleurs.

INCAS DE PIED EN CAP : Exhumées des réserves ou des collections d’autres musées, les pièces de cette exposition font revivre les textiles, parures et vêtements portés par les Incas et des populations des Andes précolombiennes.
DIS-MOI COMMENT TU T’HABILLES : Quand on pense aux Incas, on pense à la céramique et à l’orfèvrerie et rarement au textile qui était pourtant chez ces populations un art majeur plus valorisé que l’or. Marqueur du statut social, de l'appartenance religieuse ou objets d’offrande, ces pièces et leur scénographie plongent le visiteur dans une réalité fascinante. Leur état de conservation exceptionnel rend justice à l’éclat de leurs couleurs et à la sophistication des techniques, des matières et des motifs.

URBANUS? DIE VAN ANUS? Ja, die Van Anus. Sinds 1983, toen het eerste album Het fritkotmysterie verscheen, is dat subversieve baardmannetje dat met gekwelde keelklanken heilige huisjes doet instorten, ook een stripfiguur.
’T ZAL PROPER ZIJN, DAAR IN HET STRIPMUSEUM! Zeg dat wel. Stripmaker Willy Linthout heeft zich de voorbije 35 jaar niet ingehouden en wist zo al 179 stripboeken vol ranzigheid en absurditeit uit zijn mouwen te schudden. De wereld op zijn gehersenschudde kop, pure underground, maar ook intens geliefd familievertier. Hoera voor die Van Anus!
