La Cantine Arkose: food that gets you high

This week's top tip is somewhere a bit out of the ordinary: a block park located a stone's throw from the canal. The perfect combination for an escape from routine.

Food self-sufficiency in cities is a big issue currently. That is why we are seeing an increase in urban vegetable gardens, as well as the production of a range of products that would have been unimaginable ten years ago, such as hops, sake, soy sauce, kombucha, and mushrooms. All these products are now made in Brussels. Although these initiatives are vital, we must not forget the other elements that are required to satisfy the city's needs. Such as adrenaline, the hormone that is essential when you want to escape the work-sleep-repeat cycle. The French group Arkose really gets that. Created at the end of 2013 and run by four associates who share the same values, this chain has opened twelve dedicated rock-climbing centres located all over France. “Playful, fun, social, safe, this sport is accessible to everyone,” they explain.

The good news is that last July, a branch opened in Brussels, not far from the canal. Situated away from the city centre on Groendreef/Allée Verte, it is open every day from 7 am until midnight. Located in a warehouse lit by a huge skylight, it's a great place to try out with friends or as a family. We recommend starting off with an introduction to this type of urban rock climbing.

The menu has been put together in a way that reflects the values of our time: local food networks, organic produce, traceability, waste reduction

The vast “Natural Urban Climbing” centre also includes a shop and a restaurant. Decorated with a random assortment of furniture, with large windows that offer a view of the blocks, it's a good spot to unwind. All the more so given that the menu has been put together in a way that reflects the values of our time: local food networks, organic produce, traceability, waste reduction. Casting an eye over the list of beers confirms that those principals guide their choice of suppliers: Bruxellensis by Brasserie de la Senne (€6), Théorème de l'Empereur by l'Ermitage (€6), and Gueuze by Boon (€6.50).

The menu is divided into starters, large dishes, and burgers. We loved the fact that the vegetarian dishes take pride of place (there is a quinoa and halloumi burger made in Berlare for €16). We tried the thin vegetable tartine (€12), an excellent mixture of carrots, mushrooms, broccoli, and cauliflower. Pleasantly crunchy, it also included some goat's cheese and a little rosemary. Last but not least, there is also a rooftop that is ideal for sunny days and perfect for moments of relaxation following an energetic climb.
