Otako is not really a café, but rather a manga café. The name Otako is a work game: otaku is the Japanese word for aficionados of manga comics and of video games. Tako means octopus, which is both the mascot and logo of this establishment that was opened only a month ago by the young managers, Arnaud and Magali. Manga cafés are a common phenomenon in Japan. The cafés always offer small spaces where you can relax reading a manga or play games. The formula is gradually becoming more popular in Europe, and Brussels now has its very own first manga café. The building was formerly an Italian restaurant, and has been stylishly redesigned into a house of many rooms, totalling 230 square meters. For example, there is the library containing 2,900 mangas, but they are all in French. There are also plenty of little sofas to sit and read the comics, some of which are in corners almost completely closed off from the outside world. The remaining spaces focus squarely on screens. Dozens of videogames are available (160 in total, including non-manga; the list is on the website) for those initiated into the world of Xbox, Wii, and PlayStation. Fans of retro games will love the Sega Mega Drive or Nintendo. In total, there are six console points where people can play games either individually or in groups. Manga characters on the walls and the odd bamboo bush provide a cosy atmosphere. But of course you have to pay to be allowed to play: 3 euro per hour and 1 euro per extra half hour. You can also buy a day pass that includes two drinks, but there is no alcohol because the average age of the customers is between 12 and 25. You can, however, get soft drinks, coffee, chocolate milk, and snacks.

FR ❙ Otako n’est pas un café proprement dit, mais un « café manga ». « Otako » est un jeu de mots : otaku désigne en japonais les adeptes de manga et de jeux vidéo. Tako signifie « pieuvre » et c’est à la fois la mascotte et le logo de cet établissement ouvert il y a un mois à peine par les jeunes gérants, Arnaud et Magali. Au Japon, les cafés manga sont courants. On y a à sa disposition des petits espaces pour lire des mangas ou jouer à des jeux vidéo à son aise. La formule démarre doucement en Europe et voilà qu’aujourd’hui, le premier café manga de Bruxelles est une réalité. Un restaurant italien a été joliment réaménagé en une maison avec de nombreuses pièces. 230 mètres carrés au total. Il y a par exemple un espace avec une bibliothèque de 2.900 mangas, en français. Il y a aussi des divans en suffisance pour les lire. Certains se trouvent dans des coins presque complètement isolés du monde extérieur. Dans les autres pièces, les écrans télé occupent la place centrale. De nombreux jeux vidéo (160 au total, pas forcément mangas, la liste se trouve sur le site internet) sont à la disposition des joueurs pour qui la X-Box, la Wii et la PlayStation n’ont plus de secrets. Il a aussi un espace rétro où l’on peut jouer à la Sega Mega Drive ou à la Nintendo. Au total, on compte six points-consoles où l’on peut jouer seul ou en groupe. Des personnages de manga sur les murs et un buisson de bambou ici et là soignent l’ambiance. Pour pouvoir jouer, il faut évidemment payer : 3 euros par heure et 1 euro par demi-heure supplémentaire. On peut aussi acheter un pass d’un jour, avec deux boissons comprises. On ne sert pas d’alcool, parce que le public a en moyenne entre 12 et 25 ans, mais des softs, du café, du chocolat chaud et quelques en-cas.

NL ❙ Otako is een mangacafé. De naam is een woordspelletje: otaku is het Japanse woord voor de adepten van manga’s en videospelletjes. Tako betekent octopus, en dat is de mascotte en het logo van deze zaak die nog maar een maand geleden werd geopend door de jonge geranten Arnaud en Magali. In Japan zijn mangacafés een courante formule. In de cafés kun je kleine ruimtes ter beschikking krijgen om op je gemak manga’s te lezen of spelletjes te spelen. In Europa slaat de formule ook stilaan aan, en nu is dus het eerste mangacafé in Brussel een feit. Een Italiaans restaurant werd op een fraaie manier heringericht tot een huis met veel kamers, goed voor 230 vierkante meter. Zo is er ruimte voor een bibliotheek met 2.900 – bijna uitsluitend Franstalige – manga’s. Er zijn ruim genoeg sofa’s om die boekjes in te lezen. Sommige vormen hoekjes die bijna helemaal zijn afgeschermd van de buitenwereld. In de overige ruimten staan de beeldschermen centraal. Tal van videospelletjes (160 in totaal, ook niet-manga, de lijst staat op de site) staan ter beschikking van de speelvogels voor wie Xbox, Wii en PlayStation geen geheimen meer hebben. Daarnaast is er ook een ruimte waar retrospelletjes kunnen worden gespeeld op de Sega Mega Drive of de Nintendo. In totaal zijn er zes consolepunten waar individueel of in groep kan worden gespeeld. Mangafiguren op de muren en hier en daar een struikje bamboe zorgen voor de sfeer. Om te mogen spelen moet je natuurlijk wel betalen: 3 euro per uur en 1 euro per extra halfuur. Je kunt ook een dagpas kopen en daar zijn dan twee drankjes bij inbegrepen. Geen alcohol, omdat het publiek hier gemiddeld tussen 12 en 25 jaar oud is, wel softdrinks, koffie, chocolademelk en snacks.
