This week Recyclart goes on holiday, but those who know the place a little know that it will not be resting on its laurels. The giant terrace in the courtyard of the summery hotspot on rue de Manchesterstraat is still ideal for taking a break between performances and exhibitions, which are freely accessible every Thursday and Friday until the end of July (as long as there is capacity).
Recyclart Holidays: staycation with chips fingers and chewing gum sculptures
Years ago, the Flemish-Brussels singer Johan Verminnen sang about taking a holiday in his street and travelling the world sitting on his terrace. Recyclart Holidays follows the same philosophy. Even if no hip musicians from other continents are being flown in this time, the atmosphere is worldly, just like the (vegan) food.
The threshold remains low despite a fluent layer of avant-garde. There are no age limits – in the foyer, a miniature golf course has been set up! Art is linked to therapy (in the immersive Sacred Spaces) and occasionally to a good dose of swagger. The adventures of Joeri Chipsvingers (photo), the craziest of the bunch of neoclassical composers, will have to wait. But this week, you are already expected at the performance festival Nonstop, which as the title suggests has no breaks, and the spastic beats of Sagat b2b Weird Dust.
We are especially looking forward to Gilbert Descossy's chewing gum sculptures – a life's work that has been whittled down daily – and the soundtrack to Dirk Elst's novel Aria van Professor Bentoné. It took shape during a residency at Recyclart. Live, the writer-musician is assisted by guitarist Teuk Henri and (bass) saxophonist Nic Roseeuw.
