Between 17 and 23 September, Karikol is organising a culinary themed week, Proef Brussel/Goûter Bruxelles (“Taste Brussels”), with the aim of highlighting the international Slow Food movement in the capital. What is more, it is a fun way to discover lesser-known little eateries and to (re)discover forgotten products.
Slow Food has been on the ascendant in Brussels over the past few years, and promotes high-quality local food and produce that are both ecological and interesting. Local, eco-friendly, cosy, and tasty are the central values of the philosophy. Rather a hearty Ardennes ham than industrially packaged charcuterie filled with flavourings and additives; rather a fresh head of chicory than limp green beans that have spent a week coming from Kenya... They are not only better for the environment and small traditional growers, but certainly also for your stomach.
Thanks to Karikol, Slow Food has set down firm roots in Brussels, a fact that is quite evident from the well-filled programme of the themed week Taste Brussels. A whole series of restaurants has joined the initiative by offering a completely Slow Food menu for the whole week (don’t worry, the “slow” refers to the production process of the ingredients, not the preparation time in the kitchen), but you can also participate in gardening workshops, for example, where you will learn how to plant your own organic vegetable garden, or a workshop on apiculture in Brussels, or various gourmet walking tours to experience lively culinary heritage with demonstrations and tastings.
