“Cunt”, “slut”, “bitch”, and “mother”: these were the most frequent words from among the 3,500 responses that American painter Betty Tompkins received when she launched a public appeal for words (affectionate, pejorative or slang) that describe women in 2002.
The resulting series WOMEN Words is no less explicit than the long rejected work that the pioneer of feminist art has been creating on canvas since 1969 – initially based on her first husband’s porn magazine collection: photorealistic close-ups of sexual acts in series with titles like Fuck Paintings, Girl on Girl Paintings, Masturbation Paintings… Explicit graphics with a liberating message.
