Artist Léopoldine Roux, born in France but living in Brussels since 2003, presents her colourful work in a solo show in Schaarbeek/Schaerbeek.
Léopoldine Roux: from Brussels with love
"My medium is not painting, but colour," Léopoldine Roux said when we visited her studio about four years ago. "And rather than a medium, it is an experience, something you give life to." Well, there's no denying that, when you see her imposing solo show at the Maison des Arts in Schaarbeek/Schaerbeek, where several of her "blobs" – a kind of enfleshed colours in polyurethane – accentuate the space.
Examples from her paper series Living Colors and Color Suicides decorate the walls, and two Promenades – giant canvasses on which she spent months applying minuscule touches of colour – occupy the library. In the Salon Rose, Roux's Pot(e)s d'atelier even do an elegant dance, while the fountain in the garden also flows in colour.
"What you see is what there is," she said four years ago, referring to her minimalistic approach. Well, that is just as true as not. The way her colours express a sense of freedom, a lust for life, sweet nostalgia, or temptation, is surprising and heart-warming. In the hall, two series of old postcards are elegantly highlighted with nail polish. From Brussels with love? Right back at you!
