For its fiftieth birthday, 2001: A Space Odyssey is getting a new theatrical release. Take it from us: Stanley Kubrick’s illustrious sci-fi classic has to be watched in its entirety on the biggest possible screen in a pitch-black cinema.
Kubrick composed for the big screen and blows you away pictorially. The symbiosis of images and sound and of spectacle and mysticism, the slow but implacable rhythm, the relevance of artificial intelligence turning against humanity, the realism of space travel, and the cerebral qualities of the unanswerable big life questions all contribute to the total experience that only pure cinema can provide. That was the case in 1968. And it is still the case in 2018.
