9 x cinema: the best of September

Every month we select the best film releases in Brussels. These are our favourites for September: from the new Dardennes production Tori et Lokita to the David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream.

1. Tori et Lokita

À Cannes, les frères Dardenne ont remporté le prix spécial de la 75e édition. Tori et Lokita est un drame brûlant, extrait de la dure réalité. Deux adolescents originaires de pays africains s’accrochent l’un à l’autre comme frère et soeur pour s’en sortir en Belgique.

2. Sundown in Acapulco

Mexican master Michel Franco agrees with Quentin Tarantino on one thing: Tim Roth is ridiculously talented. In Sundown, the actor from Reservoir Dogs, who was outstanding in Franco’s Chronic (2015), plays a depressed man who ends up not flying back to London with his wealthy family because of a death and instead swaps the luxury resort for a shabby boarding house in a rough neighbourhood in Acapulco.

3. Revoir Paris

Vier maanden voor Brussel kreeg Parijs een gruwelijke terroristische aanslag te verwerken. De broer van Alice Winocour overleefde de slachting in concertzaal Bataclan. Het zette de regisseuse van Proxima aan tot een gevoelig portret van een overlevende vrouw. Empathie voelen voor een personage van Virginie Efira is nooit moeilijk, dit keer is er zelfs geen keuze.

4. Soy Libre

Après une belle carrière dans les festivals internationaux, le premier long-métrage de Laure Portier sort en salles. Il s’agit d’un portrait de son jeune frère, au budget modeste mais cinématographiquement ambitieux. Il fuit la France après y avoir eu trop d’ennuis, se réinventant en personnage de roman, errant, pendant des années, jusqu’au Pérou. C’est ainsi du moins que le voit sa grande soeur.

5. Three Thousand Years of Longing

The Mad Max quadrilogy proves that George Miller is the go-to guy for mad, rabid post-apocalyptic spectacles. But the Australian is in fact a kind man who believes more in love and talking pigs than in war and violence. To make sure we know this, he has created a sort of anti-Mad Max fairy tale along the lines of the Tales from the Thousand and One Nights. Tilda Swinton plays a professor of storytelling and Idris Elba a genie in a Djinn bottle. Mad Miller!

6. Moonage daydream

Geen fan van David Bowie mag deze muziekfilm aan zich laten voorbijgaan. Maar is niet iedereen een beetje fan van de artiest achter wereldhits als Heroes en Space oddity en iconische personages als Ziggy Stardust? Met de steun van het Bowie Estate en een goudmijn aan onuitgegeven materiaal heeft Brett Morgen (Cobain: montage of heck) gepoogd een overweldigend totaalspektakel te verzinnen. Op maat van de Ziggy Stardust van het totaalspektakel en dus afgestemd op de bioscopen met de beste sound & vision.

7. Akira Kurosawa

Akira Kurosawa est l’un des plus grands réalisateurs de tous les temps. L’empereur du cinéma japonais fut admiré des plus grands et copié par presque tous. Il est mort en 1998, mais il continue à vivre à travers ses drames historiques, joyaux profondément humains et spectacles grandioses qui défient le temps comme un fier samouraï. La Cinematek présente son oeuvre complète (30 films) en l’agrémentant de dix remakes, adaptations et hommages. Les plus connus étant Star Wars, Pour une poignée de dollars et 1001 Pattes.

8. Don’t worry darling

Actrice Oliva Wilde oogstte veel lof voor haar komische regiedebuut Booksmart. Haar tweede regie zou een psychologische thriller zijn over een huisvrouw in de jaren 1950 die zich vragen begint te stellen bij haar schijnbaar perfecte leven en de geheimzinnige werkgever van alle echtgenoten in de gemeenschap. De hoofdrollen zijn voor Florence Pugh uit Midsommar en Black widow en Wildes zingende boyfriend Harry Styles. (NR)

9. Triangle of Sadness

Is it a sign of the times? For the second time in three years, the Golden Palm went to a humorous film that deals with the struggle between the poor and the rich. In 2019, South Korean Bong Joon-ho won with Parasite, this year Ruben Östlund was awarded with Cannes’ main prize. The Swedish screenwriter-director already won 2017’s Golden Palm with The Square, a sociological satire on the art world. With his recent win, he joins Michael Haneke, Ken Loach and the Dardenne brothers in the exclusive club of double winners.

With his first English-language film Östlund, again seeks to provoke to think and to widen our vision. If that requires an orgy of vomit and other bodily fluids that lasts for minutes, then so be it.

Two models and influencers (Harris Dickinson and Charlbi Dean) board a luxury cruise among millionaires. To them, it is normal for the staff to dance to their tune and for their every whim to be catered for. The Marxist sea captain (Woody Harrelson) drinks himself stupid so as not to have to deal with it.

Every time you think it can’t get any more uncomfortable and miserable, that is precisely what happens. This miniature society is heading straight for the abyss at a speed of 22 knots. Following a shipwreck, the passengers end up on a desert island and that results in a major change of power. Now, the toilet manager with survival skills can make the millionaires dance to her tune instead. The exact opposite results in precisely the same.

Östlund’s critique of capitalism is anything but subtle nor does he shy away from entertaining a large audience. Spite is encouraged rather than disapproved. He offers a grotesque and sometimes cruel satire, like it or not. (NR)
