Ballon reconstructs how two young families worked together to build an air balloon to escape from communist East Germany in 1979. No, you couldn’t make it up.
Unfortunately, the film never really takes off. The why of this risky venture is barely explained, the director provides ready-made answers, adds no nuance whatsoever, and never appeals to the audience’s intelligence. The style is primped and the music is forceful. A swiftly narrated, entertaining story with all the impact of a rubber mallet.
