You cannot call Cry Macho a good film. The pace is slow and some of the actors are underwhelming, several side characters are annoyingly caricatural and the plot leaves you indifferent. Yet there is endearment lurking around the corner. For the director and leading actor is ninety-year-old Clint Eastwood.

The living legend, who reached great heights as an actor (laconic cowboys, Dirty Harry, tough bodyguards) and as a director (Unforgiven, Million Dollar Baby), makes his message explicit: “This macho thing is overrated”. But you can still see him taming wild horses, fighting with thugs and being seduced by women who could be his granddaughters. It is a coda.
