Do you prefer skinny jeans or bell-bottoms? A Fifties hairstyle from the barber, a game on the Commodore 64, or buying an original Vespa, Zippo, or Parker? You no longer have to choose because the non-profit Brussels Vintage Market has decided to organise an annual retro market that is much larger scale than the monthly events they already organise. The selection is thus also much bigger. With a sales area of 3,000 square metres in a large exhibition space at the Heizel/Heysel, decorated according to the theme, the last weekend of May will be one big celebration of the vintage trend. You can participate in a variety of workshops and dance initiatives, and – for the fans – there will be a succession of crooners, go-go dancers, and accordionists performing onstage. Just next door, in Paleis/Palais 12, Cliff Richard (73) will perform his dance hits. The septuagenarians among us will know that this is the very same Sir who once led The Shadows and scored the first British rock ‘n’ roll song with “Move It”. Sexagenarians saw him perform “Congratulations” at the Eurovision Song Contest, only to lose to Spain’s “La, La, La”. His days as a rocker were already long gone by then. The closest he ever came again, as quadragenarians will know, is when he asked those weirdos The Young Ones to reinvent his classic “Living Doll”. He’s coming to Paleis/Palais 12 to present his hundredth record: The Fabulous Rock ‘n’ Roll Songbook. We didn’t double check that number, but either way this album, a tribute to the pioneers of rock ‘n’ roll that was recorded in Nashville, fits perfectly with Retrorama, though we doubt whether anyone in their twenties, thirties, or forties – the age groups currently obsessed with the vintage rage – will be buying many tickets to his show. Alternatively, they can get him to sign one of the many vinyl singles piled high at Retrorama because he is also sticking around for a meet and greet.
