On his new eclectic pop album History, Youssou N’Dour looks back but without becoming wistful.
Youssou N'Dour: a story of the nightingale
The nightingale of Dakar, who will be sixty in two weeks, does so by presenting old favourites with fresh global talent like Seinabo Sey and the Swedish-Congolese singer Mohombi, who will be joining him in Brussels.
With two tracks by the Nigerian master drummer Babatunde Olatunji and a serene homage to bassist Habib Faye, with whom he collaborated in the 1980s to put Senegalese mbalax rhythms on the world map, he pays honour to his roots but at the same time continues to outgrow them.
