“Sometimes the nicest thing to do with a guitar, is just look at it,” Thom Yorke once said. And in Brussels, there is no better place to do so than the city’s only specialised guitar shop, called Groove Street, down Koningsstraat/rue Royale.
The shop was founded some 11 years ago by guitar player Edwin Van Bunderen. Every instrument, amplifier, effects box, and accessory is specially picked out for Groove Street, and some of the makes are even exclusive for Belgium. You’ll find everything here, from a small ukulele to a classical guitar, from a modern electric one to a copy of a vintage model from the 1950s. There is a small section of bass guitars too. Some of the brands include the Japanese Ibanez, and, if you are looking for a more exclusive model, Nash Guitars (USA), with its artificially aged and bespoke guitars, Reverend (USA), with its clever accessories, FGN (Japan), a great alternative for a Gibson, and amplifiers by 3 Monkeys (USA).
“Can a guitar shop survive in an age of electronic music?” we hear you thinking. Well, yes! While a couple of years ago, the guitar part in music was often digitally enhanced, Edwin now sees a trend to come back to analogue sound effects. It’s no coincidence that his sound boxes (he has about 200 of them) are his best sellers. And unlike some other specialised shops, the internet isn’t much of a threat either. Guitar players are very keen to test their instruments first. As every piece is unique and has its own sound, they prefer to buy from actual shops rather than online. Over the years, Groove Street has had some internationally renowned customers: Steve Lukather from Toto, Joe Satriani, and PJ Harvey, to name but a few. Neighbouring music venues Cirque Royal, Botanique, and Ancienne Belgique are regulars too. Besides guitars and accessories, Groove Street offers a repair service as well. And to improve your skills, they organise private lessons too.
