La Meute

The latest addition to the bustling Kasteleins/Chatelain area is a curiosity shop. Yes, you read that right: a shop selling old and new curiosities. When visiting La Meute on Edelknaapstraat/rue du Page, you’ll need an extra pair of eyes to take everything in.
Owner Charlotte Pasternak is a trained analog photographer. She grew up in a family of antique shop owners, and quickly developed a taste for the unusual. Scallops for instance, or antlers and old books on natural history. In her shop cum gallery, she sells everything she likes. She often travels to London to find quirky items, of which she’s almost certain you can’t find them anywhere else in Belgium. But don’t think this means that La Meute only sells strange objects. There’s something unique out there, for nearly everyone. How about china teacups with mysterious ink blots? A little Rorschach test will spice up your afternoon tea! Or black Leathersmith notebooks to write down your deepest secrets? You’ll find some artwork too, including a few enormous paintings made with Chinese ink. Music lovers might want to have a look at the vinyl collection, with a range of great electronic tracks by the French label Kill the DJ. There’s some fashion and jewellery at the back of the shop as well, all from small and independent designers.
Nearly everything you find at La Meute is monochrome, even the interior is completely black and white (including an X-ray of a twisted kneecap, used as decoration). It’s quite hard to imagine this shop was once a children’s toy shop (Little Circus, reviewed last year). To enter La Meute, you’ll have to ring the doorbell. And once inside, it’s difficult to know where you have to start looking. As Charlotte is always on the lookout for more items for her shop, we’re very curious to see what’s next.
