Barbeton

Frédéric Nicolay, Bruxellois bien connu, a conçu la déco d’un nouveau café. Le Barbeton est appelé à combler le chaînon manquant entre les deux extrémités de la rue Dansaert, où Nicolay a déjà frappé plusieurs fois dans le passé (Bonsoir Clara, le Zebra, le Walvis, le Bistrot du Canal...). Ce nouveau lieu d’escale est situé juste en son milieu, au carrefour où ceux qui traversent trouveront une pharmacie, un fleuriste et un snack pita. Le Barbeton n’est pas très grand. Il faut parfois bouger sa chaise pour permettre aux garçons de débarrasser les tables. Ce qui fait que l’établissement se classe dans la catégorie des cafés calmes où l’on peut discuter. Le Barbeton est joli. L’association du sol en granit gris, du bar en béton (une réplique de la réception de l’immeuble à appartements marseillais La Cité radieuse, de l’architecte Le Corbusier) et de bois clair est très réussie. Même si les pièces de menuiserie ont sans doute l’air un peu trop bricolée. La structure en bois devant les fenêtres est en tout cas, euh... innovante. Elle isole légèrement du monde extérieur et on peut éventuellement y laisser son bonnet, son journal ou sa collection complète de disques. Si vous voulez notre avis, il y a un problème avec l’éclairage, qui à certains endroits est vraiment trop violent. La carte ne surprendra pas la clientèle locale. La nouvelle pils Volga, brassée à la demande de Nicolay par la brasserie St-Feuillien dans le Hainaut, coule au fût. Une version plus forte de la Volga, avec 7,3 % d’alcool et un goût prononcé de houblon, est également disponible. La Vedett et les trappistes sont fidèles au poste. On peut aussi y commander un café, un sandwich ou un muffin. Dehors, quelques chaises bleu Schtroumpfs attendent déjà que le printemps fasse sa percée.

--NL-- Bekende Brusselaar Frédéric Nicolay heeft weer een nieuw café aangekleed. BarBeton moet de missing link worden tussen beide uiteinden van de Dansaertstraat, waar Nicolay eerder al toesloeg (Bonsoir Clara, Zebra, De Walvis, Bistro du Canal...). De nieuwe pleisterplek ligt netjes in het midden, op een kruispunt waar diegene die de oversteek maakt ook een apotheek, een bloemenwinkel en een pitabar vindt. Echt groot is BarBeton niet. Soms moet er worden geschoven met de stoeltjes om de uitbaters de tafeltjes te laten leegmaken. Daardoor valt de kroeg door de week eerder in de categorie van de kalme praatcafés. Mooi is Barbeton wel. De combinatie van de grijze granitovloer en de betonnen bar (een replica van de receptie van het appartementsblok Cité radieuse van architect Le Corbusier in Marseille) met het lichte hout is best geslaagd. Al ziet het timmerwerk er misschien net iets te ‘doe-het-zelverig’ uit. De houten constructie voor de ramen is in ieder geval... vernieuwend. Ze houdt de wereld een beetje buiten, en je kunt er eventueel je muts, je krant of je volledige platencollectie op kwijt. Als je het ons vraagt, is er wel nog een probleem met de belichting. Op sommige plekken is die echt iets te fel.
De kaart is vertrouwd voor de plaatselijke kroegentijger. Van het vat vloeit evenwel de vrij nieuwe Volga-pils die in opdracht van Nicolay wordt gebrouwen door brouwerij St-Feuillien in Henegouwen. Van de Volga is ook een sterke versie van 7,3 procent alcohol en een uitgesproken hopsmaak beschikbaar, maar ook de Vedett en de trappisten zijn nog op post. Je kunt hier ook terecht voor een koffie, een broodje of een muffin. Buiten wachten al een paar smurfblauwe stoeltjes op de doorbraak van de lente.

BarBeton is intended to form the missing link between the two ends of Dansaertstraat/rue Dansaert, where Nicolay has already struck (Bonsoir Clara, Zebra, De Walvis, Bistrot du Canal, etc.). The new hangout lies nicely in the middle, on the crossroads where people crossing will also find a pharmacy, flower shop, and pitta bar. BarBeton is not very big. Customers occasionally have to move their chairs so the staff can clear the tables. Consequently, in midweek, the place is more of a quiet chat café. BarBeton is, however, attractive. The combination of the grey granite floor and the concrete bar (a replica of the reception desk of the Cité radieuse apartment block by architect Le Corbusier in Marseille) with the light wood works well. Though the joinery does perhaps look slightly too DIY. The wooden construction around the windows is certainly, um, innovative. It blocks out the world, but it is certainly big enough to leave your hat, newspaper, or even your whole record collection on. If you ask us, there is a problem with the lighting. In some places it is really too bright.
To the seasoned local, the menu is certainly nothing new. On tap, however, you can get the relatively new Volga lager, commissioned by Nicolay from the St-Feuillien brewery in Hainaut. A stronger version of the Volga with 7.3 % alcohol and a distinctly hoppy flavour is also available, but Vedett and the Trappists have not been forgotten. You can also get a coffee, a sandwich, or a muffin. Outside, a few Smurf-blue chairs are already awaiting the arrival of spring.
