There was never any reason to suspect that Guo Fengyi (1942-2010) would ever exhibit at the Venice Biennale. Until she was 39, the Chinese artist worked in a rubber factory.
The intricate line drawings of Guo Fengyi
When severe arthritis prevented her from working, she resorted to alternative medicine, drawing, and qigong. Based on the visions that the meditation technique triggered, she created wonderful compositions from nothing, without any artistic background or premeditated plan.
Her intricate line drawings are populated by mythical animals, ghostly creatures that are sometimes human or monstrous, but also pulsating bodies and landscapes that devour you. Art is a healer.
