GOOD SEED... Since 2014, the Fondation Thalie has been developing a programme that bears witness to a warm heart for critical contemporary creation with poetic eloquence and a social reflex.

...MAKES A GOOD CROP. With “The Sowers”, the seed planted seven years ago has led to a group exhibition in which 26 artists – including Hana Miletic, Elise Peroi, Jacqueline Surdell, Julie Monot and Belinda Blignaut – use clay and thread to build an organic, animated space that hesitates between domestic space, exotic landscape, sanctuary and mythological realm.

VROEGTIJDIGE DOOD. Poems I will never release, 2007-2017 toont werk van de Italiaanse Chiara Fumai (1978–2017), een multimedia- en performancekunstenares die enkele jaren voor haar vroegtijdige en plotse dood nog een tijdlang in Brussel woonde.

GEEST LEEFT VOORT. Weerkerende elementen in het werk van Fumai waren feminisme en spiritualisme. Het videowerk, de installaties, collages en geluidsfragmenten in de retrospectieve laten de creatieve geest die bij leven op documenta en in Wiels te zien was, voortleven.

BACK IN TIME. Wiels dedicates an exhibition to an exceptional part of the oeuvre of Marcel Broodthaers. For the first time, it gathers all 120 plastic plaques that the Brussels artist made between 1968 and 1972, and which he himself called “industrial poems.”

TIMELESS. The artist borrowed the shape of the series of multiples from advertising signs of the time, but he exchanged the functional and commercial messages for poetic and humorous pictograms and rebuses that are typical of his work.

INTRIGERENDE SCHRIJVER. Sulaiman Addonia is een Eritrees-­Ethiopisch-Britse schrijver die al jarenlang in Brussel woont. Zijn eerste roman, Als gevolg van liefde, stond op de shortlist van de Commonwealth Writers’ Prize en verscheen in meer dan twintig talen. Stilte is mijn moedertaal stond op de longlist van de Orwell Prize for Political Fiction, en is nu naar het Nederlands vertaald.

INTRIGERENDE MAN. Addonia schreef tien jaar lang in Brusselse cafés aan dit boek over de vluchtende Saba en haar zwijgende broer, terwijl hij tussendoor fanatiek door de stad wandelde, een schrijfacademie voor vluchtelingen oprichtte en jaarlijks het Asmara-Addis-literatuurfestival organiseert.

SOUS LES ZYGOMATIQUES. De Marcel Duchamp à Wim Delvoye, l’art a fait grincer bien des dents. Dans un partenariat inédit entre Kanal Centre Pompidou et ING Belgique, cette exposition dévoile en 200 œuvres comment les artistes ont porté sur l’art un regard démystificateur.

LA FORCE DU RIRE. Le canular et l’humour ont bien souvent joué un rôle de premier plan dans les courants d’avant-garde. Malgré cela, ils ont souvent été minimisés dans l’histoire de l’art moderne. L’heure de la revanche a sonné.

IK ZIE, IK ZIE WAT IK NIET ZIE. Verwarring, als middel tot aantrekking en weg naar verdieping, ligt diep verankerd in het vloeibare oeuvre van de Brusselse kunstenaar Stephan Balleux. Dat is er in coronatijden niet minder op geworden.

IK EN DE ANDER. De man wiens beeldende werken heel bewust een speels zintuiglijk continuüm scheppen, gaat in de Botanique een samenwerking aan met geluidskunstenaar Cédric Dambrain alias Porz An Park. Daaruit vloeit een desoriënterende ruimte van beeld en geluid voort waarin je onvermijdelijk op jezelf stoot. Of is het de ander?

HAUTEMENT INFLAMMABLE. Dans son premier recueil de poésie, l’autrice incontournable, slameuse et activiste bruxelloise Joëlle Sambi additionne les mots pour en faire une matière explosive intensément libératrice.

BAPTÊME DE FEU. Le Café Congo du Studio CityGate réserve à Caillasses un baptême tout aussi enflammé. Avec des performances de l’autrice, accompagnée de la slameuse et écrivaine liégeoise Lisette Lombé. Sans oublier un DJ set de Choco Zoulou en guise de clôture.

EXCELLENT TITLE. “Parrathon” is an excellent title for this retrospective of the English photographer Martin Parr. Hangar presents the forty-year long career of the world-famous Magnum photographer with more than four hundred images.

BRILLIANT PHOTOGRAPHER. Very few events in the West in recent decades have escaped the critical but also humorous gaze of the chronicler and satirist of our time. All of his well-known series (The Last Resort, Think of England, Luxury, Common Sense...) are featured.

DANS LE CIEL ET DANS LA TÊTE. Dans les salons et aux murs de la Maison des Arts se figent des nuages, objets poétiques autant que phénomènes météorologiques, qui ont inspiré bien des artistes.

MATIÈRES À PEINDRE ET À PENSER. Claire Leblanc a puisé dans les collections du Musée d’Ixelles cette sélection subjective d’œuvres d’artistes actuels, majoritairement actifs sur la scène artistique belge, autour de cette thématique vaporeuse. Leurs visions sont mises en dialogue avec celles d’artistes issus de la collection communale.

THIS IS WHAT WE SAID about Clara-Lane Lens’ exhibition “They Never Used to Talk Much” at 254Forest earlier this year: “Her Genderless paintings seem to install a truly public, glowing, paradoxical space to inhabit, a body that shows itself in a fluid way.”

THAT’S WHAT X SAID presents itself as such a glowing, “new socio-politically engaged art space striving for systemic change.” After the inaugural show by Clara-Lane Lens, Elisa Huberty and Rébecca Prosper aim to start a discussion that goes beyond the art itself, through exhibitions, events and a shop offering work by like-minded artists.

HARD, TRAGIC, HAUNTING, TENDER, BEAUTIFUL: these are all laudatory adjectives that apply equally to the Scottish writer Douglas Stuart, who immediately shot to fame with his unsurpassed, 2020 Booker Prize winning debut novel Shuggie Bain, and to the French master storyteller Edouard Louis, who after the bestsellers The End of Eddy, History of Violence and Who Killed My Father has now completed Combats et métamorphoses d’une femme.

CLASS DIFFERENCES. The meeting of these two is not just something to look forward to because they are top writers. But mostly because they are popular writers who, like no one else, sense why the world suffers acutely from class differences and inequality.

BORDER-CROSSERS. For years now, Decoratelier has been building out loud on a scenography for a diverse city. Out loud, so that the construction itself is the dialogue. Radically open, to make space for what remains unbuilt and untold.

BORDER-LESS. These border crossings have led to projects that self-consciously and imaginatively question and stretch the boundaries of public and private space. During Decoratelier’s new multidisciplinary festival Customs & Borders, Brussels artists from the Sub-Saharan diaspora – like Brahim Tall, Martha Da’ro, Andie Dushime, Amari, Laryssa Kim and Reinel Bakole – receive us as migrants in their universe.

RIJMEN EN DICHTEN ZONDER JE OP TE LICHTEN. Van 24 tot en met 26 september ontvangt Be-Here voor het eerst de tweetalige poëziemarkt Poetik Bazar. Je komt hier niet voor een rondje shop till you drop, maar voor fijne leeswaren die glashelder maken waarom de poëzie nog toekomst heeft.

WIE LEEST, VERDIENT EEN FEEST. En dat komt ervan, in de vorm van een warme omhelzing van Passa Porta, waar ook dichters als Asha Karami, Miriam Van hee, Carmien Michels, Maja Lee Langvad, Volha Hapeyeva en Gaia Ginevra Giorgi aan deelnemen.

FRICHE AUX MOTS. Dans cette soirée de slam à micro ouvert, Lisette Lombé et Simon Raket seront les maître.sse.s de cérémonie, où l’on entendra Joëlle Sambi, Marie Darah, L’ami terrien, Miss Elli et Kiyémis.

TEMPÊTES DE POÉSIE. L’autrice française afroféministe Kiyémis aime se définir comme une afropéenne qui fait du bruit. Son premier recueil À nos humanités révoltées rassemble des textes qui mêlent l’intime et le politique.

RIEN DE RIEN. Après son iconique Empire sorti en 2015, la Bruxelloise d’origine française Marie Sordat est de retour avec un nouveau livre de photographie : Nada.

TOUJOURS PLUS LOIN. Digne héritière d’une famille de photographes sauvages et à fleur de peau (Anders Petersen, Michael Ackerman, etc.), l’artiste et professeure à l’Insas poursuit ses errances introspectives, s’aventurant toujours plus loin au pays du chaos et de la mélancolie.

WHO IS THE ARTIST? The Wetsi Art Gallery at Studio CityGate is a great spotter of talent and presents the completely unknown work of painter Nabila Hamici.

WHO AM I? Nabila Hamici moved to Philadelphia after a long stay in Paris and a childhood in Algiers. She discovered her passion for painting in a psychiatric hospital. During her one-year stay there, she frantically made 400 paintings. An intensely inhabited work that questions the triangle of “female artist, madness and decolonisation.”

LE DEUIL. « 10 juin 2021. C’était à 18h, un dimanche. Il y a 9 ans jour pour jour. Ma première nuit de deuil. » Voilà les paroles que la photographe Erell Hemmer a dédiées à son père François sur Instagram.

LA RENAISSANCE. Pendant cinq ans, elle a été plongée dans le deuil de l’ancien marin, capitaine et expert maritime, pour finalement émerger avec Pourquoi suis-je incapable d’aller sur la tombe de mon père ? « Un voyage initiatique, une recherche, un passage, une résilience », jusqu’à un livre poétique chéri par Macaronibook.

LE REGARD DE L’AUTRE. Dans son roman Dans le ventre du Congo, l’auteur congolais, installé au Canada, évoque le zoo humain, pudiquement appelé « village congolais », que la Belgique présentait dans un de ses pavillons à l’Expo 58.

LE PASSÉ INDÉLÉBILE. Peut-on dépasser le passé, comment solder la dette coloniale ? Par ses personnages inscrits dans le présent comme dans le passé colonial et précolonial, Blaise Ndala met en mots un aller-retour romanesque entre passé et présent.

KUNST UIT DE MARGES. Met Embrasez-vous! vierde Art et Marges vorig jaar nog zijn tiende verjaardag als museale vrijhaven voor wat gemeenzaam outsiderkunst wordt genoemd.

IN DE MARGES VAN DE TIJD. Dat moet nogal een feestje zijn geweest, want een jaar later maant de plek, die hartstochtelijk ’s werelds kijk op die even eigenzinnige als fragiele kunst ombuigt, nog steeds aan tot traagheid. Tussen de rimpels van de tijd wordt “een meditatieve duik in werken die zintuiglijke en tijdelijke bakens op hun kop zetten.” Van deze koesterplek verwachten we niets minder.

À UNE AUTRE AFRIQUE. Lauréate du Booker Price en 1974 et du Prix Nobel de littérature en 1991, Nadine Gordimer a laissé une œuvre épique qui dépeint avec ironie et lucidité la société sud-africaine.

PLASTIC DREAM. In addition to focus exhibitions on the history of the chair, punk graphics or nightclub design, there are also treasures to be discovered in the permanent collection of the Brussels Design Museum. Its Plastic Design Collection counts no less than 2,000 both everyday and unique objects.

A LOVE SUPREME. In “Crush”, a selection of those objects enters into a dialogue with paintings, sculptures, photographs and drawings from the temporarily displaced collection of the Museum van Elsene/Musée d’Ixelles. Romance is in the air.

INTIMITÉ À VENDRE. L’ampleur de ce basculement de l’autre côté du miroir numérique et ses potentielles sources de profit posent de troublantes questions sur l’autonomie et sur la confidentialité de notre intimité devenue une marchandise comme une autre.

DIEPGEFRONSTE MAN. Joost Vandecasteele is de thermometer in het gat van de wereld, de spreekbuis van je onderbewustzijn, de blootlegger van collectieve angsten en de diepgefronste man die iets liefs in je oren brult, waardoor je niet weet of hij het meent.

BRUSSEL-ROMAN. Helaas is er nog maar weinig geweten over de eerste roman die Vandecasteele bij zijn nieuwe uitgever Borgerhoff & Lamberigts uitbrengt, maar die laatste omschrijft het boek alvast als “zijn grote Brussel-roman”, waarin de aanslagen een rol zouden spelen. En anders wordt het iets anders.

GENERATIE NOCILLA. Met zijn Nocilla-trilogie zou Agustín Fernández Mallo, behalve schrijver ook een gediplomeerd fysicus, in z’n uppie een hele nieuwe generatie aan schrijvers hebben voortgebracht.

WAW, WAT VOOR EEN BOEK MOET DAT ZIJN? Wel, in het web tussen de drie delen ‘Dream’, ‘Experience’ en ‘Lab’, waar dwangmatig heen en weer wordt geklikt tussen feit en fictie, kunst, architectuur, literatuur en arthousecinema, zou volgens The New York Times niets minder dan “een mijlpaal in de hedendaagse Spaanse literatuur” ontstaan. De onthulling van de essentie van het leven krijgt u er als toetje bij.

MEET THE WRITER. De jonge auteur Marieke Lucas Rijneveld kent u als de eerste Nederlandse schrijver (en dichter) die ooit de International Booker Prize won. Dat betekende de internationale doorbraak voor hun debuutroman De avond is ongemak, waarna hun tweede roman Mijn lieve gunsteling misschien nog meer succes kende.

WRITER MEETS PAINTER. Rijneveld gaat in Bozar in gesprek over hun eigen werk, maar laat naar aanleiding van de tentoonstellingen met werk van David Hockney aldaar ook hun licht schijnen op liefde en verlangen in diens rijke oeuvre. Rijneveld schreef zelfs een gedicht bij een naakttekening van Hockney.

FOCUS ON SLOVENIA. The small central European country currently holds the EU presidency, and December 1 marks the opening night of Bozar’s new See Festival, focusing on south-eastern Europe. This means that Brussels and Bozar can prepare for the arrival of the great Slovenian writer Drago Jancar.

FOCUS ON WRITERS. Jancar does not come alone. In the Belgian writer Stefan Hertmans, he has an esteemed colleague opposite him who is at home in Europe, who also examines the impact of the past on the present, who is at home in various genres, who also speaks out about politics and who also has gained international success.

FOUNDING FATHER. Sol LeWitt is one of the founding fathers of minimal and conceptual art, who rose to fame in the 1960s with his Wall Drawings – he had made over 1,270 by the time he passed away in 2007 – and three-dimensional “structures”.

MOTHERLAND. Through those Wall Drawings and structures, works on paper, gouaches and archives, the Jewish Museum is zooming in on two of LeWitt’s lesser known sides: his links with his Jewish heritage – he was born to Jewish migrants from Russia – and his ties with Belgian collectors, gallerists and architects.

JAMMER... Op 12 februari 2020 kreeg de schrijfster Charlotte Mutsaers, deels woonachtig te Oostende, de VUB-literatuurprijs. Maar terstond verhinderde een wereldwijde pandemie dat de slimste, geestigste en meest eigenzinnige Nederbelgische schrijfster ter wereld in Brussel langs kon komen.

... MAAR HOERA! De volstrekt originele stem van de auteur van Rachels rokje, Zeepijn en Harnas van Hansaplast kan je nu toch horen in Bozar, waar Klara-journaliste Gudrun De Geyter met haar in gesprek gaat, en VUB-rector Caroline Pauwels een laudatio uitspreekt.

L’ART ET LA MATIÈRE. Inspirée par un recueil de Marguerite Duras, l’exposition reprend largement celle présentée par la Fondation Palazzo Magnani en Reggio Emilia à laquelle s’ajoutent les belges Léa Belooussovitch, Gwendoline Robin, Lieve Van Stappen et Arlette Vermeiren.

DEHORS ET DEDANS. Le parcours déploie des œuvres qui tissent des liens étroits entre le quotidien ordinaire et la vie intérieure. Détournant les matières organiques et des objets récupérés, ces artistes les transcendent en une poésie intime.
