The minimal blue, purple, pink, red, and orange smears of colour in the series Rayons lead us to suspect that Thomas Devaux based the works on a painting by Rothko, but nothing is further from the truth.
Thomas Devaux at Macadam Gallery: shop till you drop
Inspired by unbridled consumerism, Devaux photographs supermarket shelves, blurred into broad bands of colour with uncertain contours that together form luminous gradients.
The interpretation of this work is ambiguous. On the one hand, he highlights hypnotizing visual marketing tricks, while on the other, this abstract work allows the viewer to escape from precisely this trap. In addition to Rayons, Devaux is showing black and white portraits of shoppers.
