Fast-paced action, heroic slow motion, commedia dell’arte, thriller, and slapstick: the World Cup serves it once every four years, but in the Brussels film sector you can get it every day.
Summer at the cinemas: Cannes-on-the-Zenne
Since 1968, the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs has been screening innovative films by international talent during the Cannes Film Festival. Over the past fifty years, directors like Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Martin Scorsese, Ken Loach, and Jaco Van Dormael have presented the highlights from their careers. There is no time for a retrospective though because the Michael Haneke or Nagisa Oshima of tomorrow is moving into the spotlight. Cinematek and Flagey are joining in and screening a selection of the fiftieth edition of the Quinzaine. This might be your only chance because despite the high quality of the films shown, most of them will never be screened in Belgian cinemas.
If you have time – there’s only football on TV anyway – you can map out a trip around the world. Samouni Road is about a dispossessed Palestinian family who are preparing for a wedding in the outskirts of Gaza. In Los silencios, a mother with two children flees the armed conflict in Colombia and finds herself on an island in the Amazon. Cómprame un revólver is set in the margins of Mexican society, plagued by violence, prostitution, drugs. And in The Pluto Moment, Ming Zhang reflects on China’s Cultural Revolution.
The highlights of the fiftieth Quinzaine were Climax, Mirai, and Leave No Trace. Climax is a quickie by Gaspar Noé. The French enfant terrible (Irréversible, Enter the Void) and the Brussels cinema magician Benoît Debie depict the bad trip of a motley crew of (street) dancers. We waited far too long for Leave No Trace, the sequel to Winter’s Bone, the social thriller in which the American director Debra Granik launched the career of one Jennifer Lawrence. Mirai is a Japanese animated film about the emotional rollercoaster that a toddler goes through with the arrival of a new-born sister. Are you ready to feel more than fifty emotions at the same time?
