Next year, The Ex will blow out no fewer than forty candles on their birthday cake. Not that the Dutch punk institution spends any time whatsoever looking in their rear-view mirror.
Dutch DIY-band The Ex in Les Ateliers Claus
The band surged up out of the clenched fist of the Amsterdam squatting scene in the late 1970s and always paved their own way forward with atonal guitars, rough free jazz, or hot-blooded pop from places like, say, Ethiopia.
On one of their recent albums, Enormous Door, these socio-politically engaged DIYers surrounded themselves with the wildly tooting Brass Unbound. They are coming to Brussels without any wind instruments, though, but they are bringing drums! And guitars!
