In her shows, the Korean choreographer and set designer Kyung-a Ryu explores the relationship between the individual and the natural environment. Rather than being treated like a duality as it is within Western perception, that relationship is based on osmosis and on the observation of the sensations which the relationship produces.
Korean choreographer Kyung-a Ryu in the jaws of the lion
Drawing on the Bukcheong, a shamanic dance in which the lion mask symbolises both the fusion and the separation of living beings, Ryu plays with the forces of attraction and repulsion between humans and animals. With economy of means and highly skilful use of space, she creates a radiant world that combines abstraction and fantasy.
