In Hedi, best debut at the Berlin Film Festival, Mohamed Ben Attia zooms in on a man who submissively follows the path set out for him by his authoritarian mother: selling Peugeots and marrying a nice girl.
When he meets Rym at a tourist resort a few days before the wedding, he has an epiphany. Their love story keeps you on the edge of your seat, but the most compelling thing about this film is Hedi’s gradual awakening. Ben Attia also sketches the situation in Tunisia, but he does so subtly, no louder than a whisper.
