Black Panther (Ryan Coogler)

Shockingly late, Marvel Studios has expanded its extensive collection of blockbuster superheroes with a black superhero. Black Panther is the alter ego of T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman), the newly crowned king of Wakanda. This African country purports to be underdeveloped but actually has armour-plated rhinos, stunning natural beauty, and superior technology.

The incredible design of the futuristic, hidden world is one of the film’s strongest points. But there are plenty of others, such as the dozen or so interesting secondary characters, including many women, and the excellent performances from both familiar names and surprising newcomers. Following good films like Fruitvale Station and Creed, director Ryan Coogler has demonstrated that he also knows how to make big budgets pay off.

So far, he is one of the few directors who has managed to give a Marvel production its own cachet and to excite audiences by what is going on between the action sequences. In this case, family drama and hard political choices. This Marvel matters and that’s an unusual sensation. Can they all be like this, please?
