There is, for the time being at least, only one Amy Schumer. This sporadically amusing Schumer vehicle is far less unique, however. The American comedienne shot to fame with risqué jokes, unvarnished opinions, and emancipatory statements in TV shows, stand-up shows, and on social media.
The question is whether her unfiltered humour can really do well in the context of mainstream film comedy. Trainwreck occasionally made it seem like it could, but I Feel Pretty is far less successful.
The question is also whether she has not bitten off more than she can chew and drastically overestimated her skills as an actress. Carrying a film almost entirely alone is difficult, especially when you are doing it as a superficial character who only thinks in hackneyed clichés and simplistic truisms. Schumer plays a woman in her thirties who is desperate for appreciation. When she falls off an exercise bike and hits her head, she awakens thinking that she is stunningly beautiful.
This temporary self-confidence does wonders. She gets a job as a secretary at a cosmetics company without actually knowing anything about what ordinary women want. Unfortunately, this situation results in corniness rather than in biting satire. Disappointing.
