A piano is not a piano. Before you think that we’ve been influenced by yet another New Year’s spectacle: these are not our words, but those of the renowned, 75-year-old pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim.
Or wait, perhaps not literally. The fact is that the development of what we call a “piano” is still ongoing. You can witness it for yourself at this concert featuring “the unique Barenboim-Maene” piano, a new instrument that is the result of innumerable hours of searching and struggling, listening and try-outs.
It looks no different from the outside, but the inside of the instrument is unrecognisable.
Debussy’s distinctly rich tonal palette is the ideal programme for Barenboim’s sound fetishism.
