Madou: 'Is er iets?'

De Nederlandstalige pop van Madou was in 1982 nog te onconventioneel en te eigentijds om in een braakliggend muzieklandschap een carrière op te bouwen, ondanks die indringende stem van Vera Coomans, de Marianne Faithfull van de Lage Landen. Is er iets? is het logische vervolg op het haast veertig jaar oude debuut. Niets is voor altijd, en dus kwamen plots alle superlatieven naar boven voor deze belpopband, die letterlijk en figuurlijk de brug slaat naar de volgende generatie.

'Superpositions'

Le livre Superpositions vous fait revivre les grandes heures du cinéma ABC, célèbre temple du porno de Bruxelles, à travers une centaine de photos vintage pour vitrines de cinéma. Dans les années septante, ces photos étaient retouchées par l’exploitant lui-même afin d’éviter une amende pour atteinte à la pudeur. Aujourd’hui, cette censure maladroite fait plutôt sourire, même si certains collages ont un aspect résolument artistique avec leur mélange de surréalisme belge et de pop art américain. 75 Dollar Bill: '17'

It was quite something, trying to stay relevant as a small cultural house during the pandemic. Les Ateliers Claus did it by means of an upgrade of the house label. Recently we were treated to some fine music by Ghent sound artist Lennert Jacobs and Canadian singer-songwriter Myriam Gendron. But their particularly beautifully illustrated Live Ateliers Claus series stood out, as evidenced also by this compilation of two passages by 75 Dollar Bill, an eclectic band from New York, who delivered completely different sets in 2016 and 2019.

Alix Garin : 'Ne m'oublie pas'

S’il n’avait fallu lire qu’une seule BD cette année, ce serait à n’en pas douter le Ne m’oublie pas de la Bruxelloise Alix Garin. Ce roman graphique aborde de manière inédite la question de la maladie (Alzheimer) et des relations intergénérationnelles. Le tout pour un récit bouleversant, porté par un dessin aussi épuré qu’efficace, qui n’est pas sans évoquer une sorte de Thelma et Louise, le film culte de Ridley Scott, inclusif et empathique.

Pizza Noise Mafia

Terwijl cd’s naar de slachtbank worden geleid (of de tweedehandswinkel) en vinyl floreert, sluimert ergens diep in de ondergrond de cassette. Muziek op die ooit onwijs populaire magneetband heeft lekker veel charme. Zeker als ze wordt verdeeld door het eigenzinnige Brusselse label Stadskanker, dat releases op cassette (en vinyl) van smerige elektronica en dito noise van onder meer Pizza Noise Mafia, Stakattak en Haemers verkoopt tegen democratische prijzen.

Angèle : 'Nonante-Cinq'

Difficile d’ignorer l’existence du deuxième album d’Angèle. Sorti un peu plus tôt que prévu sur les plateformes numériques, Nonante-Cinq est désormais disponible en CD et en vinyle. Une bonne idée cadeau pour chanter ‘Bruxelles je t’aime’ dès l’apéro et embarquer à bord des montagnes russes émotionnelles de la chanteuse au moment d’attaquer la bûche glacée.

Box with postcards

In order to support its self-financed activities threatened by the crisis, the gallery L’Enfant Sauvage, Brussels’ own oasis for artistic photography, is launching a crowdfunding campaign in the form of photographic gifts to be placed at the foot of the Christmas tree. Among them, a wonderful metal box containing 23 postcard photos (10x15cm format) made by a vibrant scene of wild artists, among which many from Brussels.

Julie Scheurweghs: 'Mère'

Photographer Julie Scheurweghs showed the exhibition “Birth of a Mother” at the photo biennale in Ostend this summer. With photos of mothers who are pregnant, are giving birth or having just delivered a baby. But Scheurweghs also works with existing images. She selected the photos that her partner took when Scheurweghs herself gave birth to a child two years ago after a 16-hour home birth, and edited them into an autobiographical document that is unusually close to her as a new mother.

Judith Vanistendael: 'De walvisbibliotheek'

Als er dit jaar één boek was dat ons midscheeps raakte, was het De walvisbibliotheek van scenarist Zidrou en tekenaar Judith Vanistendael.
