The Star Wars saga is exactly forty years old. The Last Jedi (Episode VIII) kindles great hopes that the popular franchise still has a bright future. Director Rian Johnson had the good sense to focus first and foremost on entertaining space opera.
He serves up lightsabre fights, soap-like plot twists, and characters in the strangest shapes, colours, clothes, and metals. He doesn’t stint on the drama or heroism, injects the occasional joke, and lets Yoda declaim his wisdom as only he can.
Veterans Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill have been given a prominent place in the sun, but at the same time the new generation is explicitly taking the reins. It’s not a day too soon.
