'High Life': peculiar but all the more penetrating

A spaceship lightyears away from earth is hurtling towards a black hole. The crew consists of convicts who escaped the death penalty by submitting to the experiments of a doctor obsessed with reproduction (Juliette Binoche).

Robert Pattinson in a stellar role wrestles with meaninglessness of existence, and with a baby in tow. Don’t ask. A Claire Denis film in space is not much different than a Claire Denis film on earth: peculiar and anything but easily digestible, but all the more fascinating and penetrating as a result.
