In 2017, some concertgoers were arrested in Egypt for waving a rainbow flag during a performance by Mashrou’ Leila. Lead singer Hamed Sinoo’s often satirical lyrics about his sexuality and society’s hypocritical reaction to it has been challenging the community since the band was founded in 2008.

And yet their mix of indie rock and traditional Arabic rhythms was an immediate success. In 2015, the queer rockers from the Beirut underground became the first Middle Eastern band to be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone. Since then, they have collaborated with Róisín Murphy and Joe Goddard. The Beirut School is preparing a European breakthrough.
