Bixiga is the name of the neighbourhood in São Paulo where the band was formed. 70 refers to Africa 70, Fela Kuti’s first orchestra.
Bixiga 70's Brazilian fireworks
And yet, Bixiga 70 is anything but your typical Afrobeat band because their music is also influenced by Afro-Brazilian music, jazz, hip hop, and progressive rock, resulting in an irresistible Brazilian groove with which they first conquered Brazil and then took Europe by storm.
Glitterbeat Records has now also discovered the band and so the hippest global sounds label right now is releasing Bixiga’s new record, Quebra Cabeça. The blazing winds, funky guitars, and polyrhythmic beats will bring fireworks to the Ancienne Belgique!
