“I used to have other people’s perception in mind as opposed to just saying what I wanted to say,” Caleb Parker aka Caleborate recently admitted in an interview. But judging by Real Person, the latest album by the 24-year-old Californian rapper (whom you might know from his featuring on the blackwave. track “Flow”), he seems to have gotten over that feeling.
Caleborate: witty and real
His witty, introspective rhymes, served on a bed of soul samples, might need several hearings to reveal their inner meaning, but on tracks like “Bankrobber”, “Down”, and “Life”, he is clearly battling his own demons.
“I think what can keep hip hop from being pop is that realism in it.”
