The decor in L’Oriento is warm and welcoming and the food is irreproachable.
With the lunchtime buffet for €14.50, you can choose as much as you like from a variety of dishes. The hummus topped with black olives and pomegranate seeds, semolina lightly flavoured with tomato, and smoked aubergine caviar with a hint of cumin are particularly memorable. The vine leaves are a must.
Though not unfriendly, the place takes “self-service” too far. If you’re not familiar with the formula, or with Syrian/Lebanese food, don’t count on an explanation. It’s a pity, such an excellent and generous approach to food should go hand in hand with human contact.
