Actor Taro Yamamoto was sailing through life, but in 2011, the tsunami, the subsequent nuclear disaster, and Japan’s half-hearted response were a wake-up call.
Alain de Halleux had already issued warnings about nuclear power in Welcome to Fukushima (2013) and Chernobyl 4 Ever (2011), but is looking further afield now.
His portrait of Yamamoto also sketches a Japan ensnared by nationalism, xenophobia, and militarism.
These are certainly relevant themes, but you could as well watch this film on television.
