After a car accident, bad boy John Callahan is paralysed. Initially, this doesn’t prevent him from boozing. Gus Van Sant focuses his dramatic arc on the long rehab process with Alcoholics Anonymous.
Callahan eventually becomes famous as an outspoken cartoonist. Joaquin Phoenix is excellent, Jonah Hill is surprising, and Rooney Mara’s character is a hoot.
Compared to weekend films, Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot is a winner, but compared to Van Sant’s other work it is sobering.
