Polish cult director Krzysztof Warlikowski likes to present classical opera with a twist. At De Munt/La Monnaie, his Medea had an Amy Winehouse touch. The war hero Macbeth was reminiscent of a Vietnam veteran, and Don Giovanni was a porn addict.
Dostoevsky behind bars
Leoš Janáček’s final opera already has darkness built into its unusual setting: the report of Dostoevsky’s incarceration in a Siberian labour camp.
Warlikowski transposes the story to a maximum security prison. Along with Janáček’s feverish score, we are looking forward to an explosive production.
The cast is coming over from the Royal Opera House in London, where it was declared to be “the best cast in years” this spring.
