After a slightly disappointing foray into the courtroom drama (The Third Murder), Hirokazu Kore-eda is returning to his favourite subject: families.
In Shoplifters, he shows a very unusual family. The members are not blood relations, but they have shacked up together in a tiny house because they have no other choice. They have no problem with petty crime to make ends meet. Without making excuses, Kore-eda asks us for empathy. The Japanese filmmaker finally won his Golden Palm, and rightfully so.
