After Congolese independence in 1960, Bofane fled with his family to Belgium. Later he returned to Kinshasa and worked in advertising. But in 1993 he settled permanently in Brussels. "I started with a children's book about the dictatorship, The Lion is No Longer King. It was an immediate and relative success."
