Pinocchio has been popular for 140 years. Both Guillermo del Toro and Robert Zemeckis are working on adaptations of the living wooden puppet who ignores the fatherly advice of the carpenter Geppetto and prefers to explore the wide world than go to school. Matteo Garrone (Gomorra, Dogman) has beaten them to it. He has unambiguously opted for fantasy, with lavish costuming, theatrical performances, colourful sets, and wondrous characters. His Pinocchio is much darker, more fantastical and grotesque than the famous Disney film.
